E3 2019 – Microsoft Presentation

I love this time of year.  Not only because it’s my birthday, but because it’s always E3!  Finding out what kinds of new adventures await us in the gaming world is always the best part of my birthday.  Microsoft had a pretty decent showing this year as opposed to others.  They announced their new system, Xbox Scarlett, which will be releasing Holiday 2020 along side the newest entry in the Halo franchise, Halo Infinite.  I know some of these games are multi-platform, but Microsoft had the honor of announcing them, so we’ll give them that.

There were plenty of other announcements yesterday, but here are the ones that piqued my interest…

We’ve known for awhile now that Microsoft was working on a new system.  While we don’t know exactly what it looks like, it seems like they are really striving for an immersive experience where there are no loading screens.  It’s game-play first and foremost.  Now, I’m all for that but in order for this type of system to work I’m probably going to have to invest in a new TV.  Who, knows, but I’m thinking going into the next generation is going to be expensive.  Apparently Sony is working on the PS5 as well but nobody knows for sure if or when that will be released.  Hopefully we’ll get to see what they’re going to be bringing to the next-gen table soon.

Releasing with Microsoft’s new console is Halo Infinite.  While the trailer doesn’t give too many details away, it looks like we’ll be teaming up with someone new.  Could it be a buddy cop movie IN SPACE?  Time will tell friends.  Any Halo news is good news.

The original Gears of War was the reason I bought an Xbox 360.  Long story short, my parents had given me money for the PS3 but I absolutely had to have Gears of War after playing it on my brothers Xbox.  I was so obsessed with the original I actually unlocked the “Seriously…” achievement (10,000 Ranked Kills Online).  Gears 5 will continue the story of Gears of War 4 with returning hero Kait Diaz struggling to uncover her identiy and family’s troubled past.  The trailer above shows off the game mode “Escape” which is like Horde mode except you’re planting a bomb and trying to get out before it goes off.  Could be interesting playing with some buddies.

The creepy trailer for Elden Ring, which is being developed by FROMSOFTWARE and George.R.R Martin was shown off yesterday.  According to game director Hidetaka Miyazaki it will be open world but have that classic Dark Souls feel and experience.  Is that some kind of spider person at the start putting their hand into someone else’s dismembered arm?  I have no fucking idea but sign me up.

No release date has been set yet for Elden Ring

While not showing off anything particularly new.  The Borderlands 3 trailer is just awesome and gets me even more hyped for it’s September release date.

Keanu Reeves stole the show when he showed up to announce the release date for CD Projekt Red’s next big RPG Cyberpunk 2077.  It’s only a cinematic but it shows off just how gritty this game is going to be.  With plenty of moral dilemmas (it’s coming from the guys that brought you Witcher 3), I can’t wait to explore this technologically messed up world, with Keanu Reeves at my side of course.

This was the highlight for me during Microsoft’s presentation, hands down.  As a fan of the original Phantasy Star Online on Dreamcast and Gamecube, I was disappointed that we hadn’t seen this entry come our way (I think it’s been eight years since it was released in Japan).  The wait is finally over now though (and it’s free to play)!  I’m a little disappointed it isn’t coming to PS4 (yet) because that’s where I play with my friends, but maybe this could convince them to get an Xbox One.

As for today (June 10th), we’re looking at presentations from Ubisoft and Square EnixSquare Enix actually announced the release date for the Final Fantasy 7 Remake yesterday which will be March 3rd, 2020 on PS4.  Tomorrow (June 11th aka my birthday) we’re looking at a presentation from Nintendo.  If they don’t announce the Secret of Mana Collection at either the Square Enix or Nintendo presentation, we riot. – NVJ
