Edit: So I wrote this as a speculation piece initially, but Kotaku has come out and said that certain sources working on the game claim that Fallout 76 is indeed an online open-world survival RPG. Welp, that kinda ruins the mystery. At least I was right!
Yesterday, Bethesda teased the reveal of a new Fallout game. Today, we kind of found out what it was. We got a title and a teaser trailer. That’s it. You can check out the trailer below.
An article on Kotaku says that it is rumored to be online. Immediately my mind jumped to thinking it’ll be like Elder Scrolls Online. A Fallout MMO would be amazing. It just seems like the next logical step, right? You could run different dungeons or vaults with a team, do quests. Elder Scrolls Online, now that it has become free to play, has proven to be a success.
As I thought about it some more though, I started to go against the whole MMO type game structure. I don’t think it’s going to be anything like that. I’m starting to think it’s going to be more like Conan Exiles.
Conan Exiles is all about surviving in a wasteland. You battle all manner of creature and build a base (complete with slaves, if you’re a sadistic person). It’s like Minecraft except much more violent. Fallout could definitely work the same way as Conan (minus the slaves… Well, maybe you could have robot servants to help out). In the Fallout 76 trailer, the voice-over states “When the fighting has stopped, and the fallout has settled. You must rebuild. In vault 76, our future begins.” It just seems to be emphasizing a lot on the building. There’s even a party going on, with a poster that says “Celebrate Reclamation Day!“. I know you’ve reclaimed the lands in other Fallout games, but I think this time it’s going to have a real impact. You’re going to be able to shape the world around you. Fallout 4 introduced base building mechanics. Maybe that was the stepping stone. Imagine roaming the wasteland with your friends, building a base, fighting for survival against other players, keeping your radiation levels low. Sounds like a swell time to me.
This is all speculation though, I could be completely wrong (fuck, that would be embarrassing). We won’t know anything until the Bethesda E3 conference which is being held on Sunday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m. PT/9:30 p.m ET and June 11th at 2:30 a.m BST. When they unveil what exactly Fallout 76 is, we’ll see if I’m right. – NVJ
What do you guys think it’s going to be?
