The Round Up – January 3rd, 2018

Another week, another Round Up.

Happy New Year!!

I know I’m three days late, but whatever.  2017 was a pretty great year for entertainment.  It started off strong with numerous big game releases like Nier: Automata (which I haven’t played yet, sad face), Horizon Zero DawnPersona 5, Resident Evil 7 & a small game called Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.  The Nintendo Switch released to well deserved praise.  It’s a fantastic system and I can’t wait to see a new Pokemon game released on it.  The biggest let down of last year would have to be Marvel Heroes Omega shutting down after only a few months of operation.  It was an action RPG I really enjoyed, but now I need something else to fill that void.  In film, we watched the brilliant Dunkirk, the polarizing Star Wars: The Last Jedi, Thor: Ragnarok, CocoJustice League.

Now, it’s 2018, and I’m hyped for what this year has to offer.  We’re getting films like Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War, Aquaman, Ready Player One & Solo: A Star Wars Story.  On the games front, I’m looking forward to the Shadow of Colossus remake, the new From Software game, the Secret of Mana remake, a new Pokemon game on Switch (I really want a new Pokemon game) & the new World of Warcraft expansion.  As always, it’s great to be a geek.

Let’s see what’s going on this week…….

The World Health Organization lists two gaming related health disorders

My first reaction was WHAT?  But now that I’ve sat down and thought about it, I’m glad they’re looking into things like this.  I’m not sure why cell phones haven’t been added to the list, but give it time.  The WHO has gaming disorder listed as an addictive behavior alongside gambling, while hazardous gaming is a pattern of gaming behavior “that appreciably increases the risk of harmful physical or mental health”.  Recently, loot boxes have come under fire for allowing players to spend large amounts of real cash on in game content.  When it comes to hazardous gaming, it’s always been a scary thought to me.  I played Final Fantasy XI for years and it was all I ever did.  I laugh about it now, but I was seriously addicted to it.  We’ve seen cases of people literally playing a game until they die from starvation or couples that have neglected their child because they were at an internet cafe playing a game.  I’ll always think gaming is a great thing, but like all great things, there’s always another side to it, whether we like to admit it or not.

New game from Fumito Ueda?

Ico, Shadow of the Colossus & The Last Guardian creator Fumito Ueda teased a possible new game yesterday with this big ass picture.  ResetEra user Rösti (I fucking love Rosti… the food) pointed out that in the picture there is text that reads “Beauty and the Beast 2018“.  If we’re getting a new game from him this year, I’m beyond stoked.  I have loved every game he’s released so far.  They have minimal story, but they’re so grand and rich with secrets, you can’t help but get invested.  The girl in the picture kind of looks like Yorda from Ico, so who knows.  Other then this image though, there’s nothing else to go off of, so let the speculation begin!

IGN First – New Slender Man film coming this year

The film Slender Man “tells the story of a tall, thin horrifying figure with unnaturally long arms and a featureless face, who is reputed to be responsible for the haunting and disappearance of countless children and teens.”  I’ve always found this Creepy Pasta fascinating.  I find the real life horrors that this story has caused (watch the HBO documentary Slender) far more terrifying then the Slender Man himself.  This one looks like it could be good, with some striking imagery in the trailer.  Definitely going to keep my on this one.

Slender Man releases in theaters May 18, 2018.

Gaming New Years Resolutions

This year I’m going to make a conscious effort to play Nier: Automata.  I’ve heard nothing but good things, and for whatever reason I’ve been putting off picking it up (probably because I don’t want to be soul crushingly depressed after playing it, if the rumors are true).  What games are in your back log that you want to get around to playing?  Is there one that you started playing and set aside for something else?  Let us know!

That’s it for The Round Up, Happy New Year!
