FFXIV Palace of the Dead – What’s Next?

We’re months away from the release of Final Fantasy XIV’s next expansion, Stormblood.  I’m caught up on the Main Scenario quest line, and I’m starting to feel like I’m stuck in limbo.  The wait is killing me.  When they announced Red Mage I was beyond stoked.  It’s always been one of my favourites, and my most played class in FF XI.  I’m currently planning out how I’m going to level my Red Mage (cause that’s what you do when you’re stuck in limbo).  For 50-60, will I stick to dungeons?  OR will I grind Palace of the Dead?  While I pondered that, I figured it was about time to level my Black Mage, since Red Mage will be sharing the same gear.  Once I started on my Black Mage, I quickly realized the fastest way to level is through Palace of the Dead (up until level 50).

Initially I ran it a few times when it first came out just to beat up to floor 100, and then that was it for me.  Recently, friends of mine started playing FF14 again and now we’ve been running it constantly.  It’s a great addition and definitely keeps the leveling process interesting with the randomly generated enemies & traps on each floor.  I currently have my aetherpool arm and armor at +99.  At this stage, my Black Mage melts anything that comes at us.  The group dynamics are really flexible; running it with 4 dps, I’ve had no problems clearing floors 90-100.  The wait times to get in are great too.  You’re waiting a max 5 minutes instead of the 20 minutes it takes to get in a regular dungeon as a dps (this should only get better with the supposed release of cross servers for Palace in Stormblood).  The only downside is you don’t get experience until you’re finished the ten floors you’re running, but the bonus is it doesn’t waste any of your rested XP (and it’s a sizeable chunk at the end.  20 floors usually level me).

My main concern with Palace of the Dead right now is you currently get 100% bonus xp up until level 50.  Once you hit 50 it drops to 50% bonus xp.  This significantly kills the momentum.  Are they going to increase it to 100% from 50-60 when the level cap goes to 70?  Then I guess it would drop to 50% from 60-70 (It won’t matter at first because we’ll all just be running the main scenario/new dungeons for xp).  I haven’t heard anything about what they’re doing with Palace of the Dead in Stormblood.  It’s honestly one of the reasons I keep my subscription active right now (and the hilarious Moogle Beast Tribe questline…. I know, I’m really late to the party on that one).  My friends and I love running it, and I’m surprised it hasn’t got old.  They must have something in the works.  Maybe some new additions; new pomanders or traps.  They’ll have to mix in the new enemies from Stormblood too.  Give us any info!…….  Please?

It seems to be a really popular addition to the game.  Quarrymill is always overflowing with people.  I just hope it’s being updated sooner rather than later in Stormblood’s life cycle.  But for now, all I can do is chill out in my little limbo, waiting for any scrap of info so I can continue concocting my Red Mage master levelling plan.

What are your thoughts on Palace of the Dead?  Is it something you love running?  If so, what would you like to see added?  Or is it something you avoid like the plague?  Let me know!  – NVJ

FFXIV: Stormblood launches on PC, MAC & PS4 June 20th, 2017 (early access June 16th if you pre-order).
