Hot on the heels of Ben Afflecks departure as director, we get the news that Matt “Cloverfield, Let Me In, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes” Reeves will be stepping up as director for The Batman. I’m a little disappointed. I thought Affleck could have brought something to the film, he’s a fantastic director. However, I am grateful that the film is being made period. The amount of backlash the DCEU has been taking is tremendous, they just can’t seem to catch a break. I’ll admit, Suicide Squad did disappoint me. I enjoyed it but not nearly as much as I thought I would. Batman V Superman on the other hand, I loved it. Actually let me rephrase that, I loved the extended cut. I liked the theatrical release. I didn’t quite understand why they took so many things out that would have made the story flow better but I enjoyed the original nonetheless.
With Matt entering the fray, my mind is at ease. I thought Cloverfield was really well done when it first released. We did get a ton of found footage movies afterwards, but I’ll always be fond of that one. Let Me In was a faithful adaptation of Let The Right One In, which surprised me because I was worried it was going to tarnish the name. Last but not least, Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes was very well done and I cannot wait for The War For The Planet Of The Apes (they really should have made shorter titles damn) to come out. Matt knows how to tell a great story, hopefully WB will let him tell that story. There’s so many cuts being made to these films, they’ve already reworked the script. It seems the trend is just to wait for the directors cut to see the proper movie that was supposed to be released. Let’s cross our fingers The Batman will be a full fledged movie when it comes out. I have no idea how Wonder Woman will turn out. I’m hoping it’ll be amazing, but who knows. I will reserve my judgment till I see it!
DC and WB have a chance here to make people believe in the DCEU brand. Batman is one of the most popular superheroes and they could take this franchise to the next level. Bringing in a talented director like Matt could be the breath of fresh air the DCEU needs. If Deathstroke does end up being the villain, we could finally get that live action Arkham Origins fight we’ve always wanted (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1z3GJfyf4XM yeah, you know you want to watch it again). They would actually be crazy not to recreate it, or something like it. As always I reserve my judgement for the release. I know there’s a bunch of you out there that will hate this movie no matter how good it is, but lets just calm down and give the DCEU a chance. Did I mention they would be crazy to not do that Deathstroke fight in live action? – NVJ
